Nip/Tuck – The Sixth and Final Season (2009 – 2010/Warner Bros. DVD)
Picture:

Perhaps I
sound like a broken record by this point, but Nip/Tuck was one of the best series to ever appear on
television. The first three seasons were
some of the best television of all time; dark, gritty and gripping like no
other series before it. Nip/Tuck was so insanely creative that
it has me jumping out of my non-surgically enhanced skin to see what was
next. With that said, however, the
series did hit a rough spot in Season 4 and
part of Season 5 that almost ruined
everything that was previously established.
The writers quickly saw the errors of their ways and fixed the
shortcomings to bring the series back up to par. Season
6 (as the title states) is the end of Nip/Tuck
and manages to round off what had building for five seasons.
If you
thought the series was crazy before, you haven’t seen anything yet. Season
6 starts with the repercussions of Christian marrying Liz after his cancer
scare; in turn opening a whole host of problems and craziness for poor Dr.
Troy. Sean continues to try to be the
healer, but endlessly chops off his own foot.
Next we have an armed mime robbing convenience stores mixed in with
homicidal/suicidal wives. The most
amazing part of the series has always been how everything gets tied together in
the end; and that doesn’t stop in Season
6. Every character is insanely self
destructive and no matter how hard they try they continue to fall back into
their old ways. After years of filling
their lives with materialistic and superficial pleasures, it may all be too
late to fix anything; but that won’t stop the boys from trying. Whereas I was somewhat disappointed with the
final episode (too happy), it does nicely wrap everything up and allows the
series to come full circle.
The
picture and sound are the same as was found in Season 5: Part 1 and Part 2.
The picture again is presented in an anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1
Widescreen frame that is crisp and clean, but does have its moments of
light/dark issues, grit, and off balance colors. The sound is a Dolby
Digital 5.1 Surround Sound that does nicely use all the speakers at one point
or another, but mostly comes from the front and the surrounds kicking in mainly
for the scenes the utilize music.
Extras
are nearly nonexistent as the only bonus material is a featurette entitled Tell Me What You Don’t Like About Yourself –
The Psychology Behind Plastic Surgery; which I did not find all too
interesting and more preachy than anything.
This being the final season release I would have expected more, but
perhaps the studio has more tricks in their medical bag for the Blu-ray
release.
I whole
hearted recommend Nip/Tuck and
whether you have been enjoying it from the beginning or need a new guilty
pleasure the series is simply amazing.
It is best to watch the downward spiral of the characters lives, but at
any point you pick it up I am sure you will be amazed.
