You Really Got Me The Story Of The Kinks + U2
Let Them Be (MVD DVDs)

So many
bands followed in the wake of The Beatles and so many aspired to be as
successful. Two of them had their
moments. The Kinks had a great run
following the band and U2 is one of the few Rock Bands left with any such
success as the genre has dwindled. Music
Video Distributors has issued a rough documentary on The Kinks and repackaged
two other releases on U2.
You Really Got Me The Story Of
The Kinks is a
hodgepodge of old footage, rough footage and three music videos (Come Dancing, State Of Confusion, Do It
Again) that try to tell the story, history and influence of the band and
especially Ray Davies in action. Fans
will like it maybe, but it is far from the best introduction or program on the
band and though some interesting items turn up, I would not recommend it as
strongly as I had hoped for.
The
letterboxed 1.78 X 1 image is soft, rough, some footage is a few more
generations down than it should be and even the Videos are cut at the top and
bottom, though they likely should not be.
The Dolby Digital 2.0 sound is barely stereo and often monophonic, with
rough sound and you should be a bit careful of volume switching and playback
levels.
U2 Let Them Be: The Second
Chapter has a
faux imitation of The Beatles cover for Let
It Be with the original Fab Four replaced by these four. This repackages the following two DVDs issued
a few years ago:

The Kinks has no extras, but the U2 discs
retain their few goodies. The U2 set is
convenient for fans who may have missed out on the single releases, but I was
only so impressed. For more on The
