Bessie
Smith is one of the most important singers and performers of the 20th
Century, rightly known as The Empress Of The Blues, led a too-short life like
so many music greats. One big fan is
singer/pianist Amina Claudine Myers and has recorded several albums to
date. One of her earliest is the 1980
album simply entitled Amina Claudine
Myers Salutes Bessie Smith and this fitting tribute work is now available
as a hybrid Super Audio Compact Disc from Intermusic and Top Music.

The
songs, most written by Smith herself (Miss Myers wrote the latter two) and
often here in extended form, include:
1)
Wasted
Life Blues
2)
Dirty
No-Gooder's Blues
3)
Jailhouse
Blues
4)
It
Makes My Love Come Down
5)
The
Blues (Straight To You)
6)
African
Blues
It is sad
how Smith’s work has been too forgotten, even with some limited film of her
around, but her contribution to American Music and its development is
inarguable and Myers’ performances are very impressive, rich and
heartfelt. You can especially hear this
on the high resolution DSD 2.0 Stereo tracks.
This is a rich, warm recording that holds up 30 years later and was well
made to begin with, though the parties involved decided not to go for any
multi-channel mixes. The CD layer’s PCM
2.0 Stereo sounds good, but is no match for the DSD. Fans of Blues or either of these performers
will enjoy this disc.
