Dora The Explorer – Dora’s Big Birthday Adventure (Nickelodeon DVD)

Picture: C+     Sound: C+     Extras: C-     Episodes: C+

The only Dora title I have seen so far was very disappointing, but was a fantasy work atypical of the series Dora The Explorer.  Dora’s Big Birthday Adventure is much more interesting and is one of the three episodes included in this single DVD from Nickelodeon.  This turns out to be the final part of a Magic Storybook Trilogy (imagine that) as she is joined by Boots and explores celebrating that special time of year.

The plot is about them finding something called the Wishing Wizzle so they can get back to Dora’s party in time.  Nothing like getting lost on the big day.  Then they have to help the Wizzle get back to its birthday in another episode.  Finally the Wizzle has lost its wishes (I did not know that you could lose them and that is not the same thing as forgetting them) so that rounds out the related shows.

As usual, the animation is just fine for a new show and except for minor aliasing errors, plays well and has good, consistent color.  The 1.33 X 1 image in all cases looks better than a TV broadcast and that is the only reason to still make these DVDs.  The Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo also sounds just fine, though it can be quiet as not to hit young viewers over the head with loud sounds.  The only extra besides the slipcase is a DVD game.
