A new
wave of Nat King Cole reissues are arriving from several companies on new vinyl
and especially Super Audio Compact Disc formats. One of the most interesting of these releases
is a collection of his Spanish language recordings entitled Canta Espanol: 23 Grande Exitos which
contains 23 of his most popular songs in the language. Top Music International is behind the release
and it is as strong as any of their SA-CDs we have covered to date.

Even if
you don’t understand a word of what he is singing, his phrasing and smooth
voice are as amazing here as ever, you can understand why he so easily
translated into other languages and shows what a master vocalist he really
was. None of these tracks were among his
27 U.S. Top 40 hits, but they are all as pleasing and a very pleasant surprise
of a release overall. Serious music fans
will want to get a copy.
The DSD
2.0 sound is very impressive throughout, but the stereo tracks are often
especially impressive and are some of the best 2-channel sound we have heard in
the format in a long time. Chen has made
these songs sound as warm and clear as they were originally intended, with an
analog-like smoothness that only complements the music. The decision to skip a 5.1 or similar
multi-channel mixes is a good one and 3.0 is as far as any of the other Cole
SA-CDs intend to go, so purists will be happy with that. The PCM 2.0 CD tracks are not bad, but they
cannot compete against the higher resolution of the DSD (Direct Stream Digital)
signal, especially in the case of the stereo songs.
A paper
foldout with brief notes is also included.
