Gossip Girl – The Complete Third Season (2009 – 2010/Warner DVD Set)

If you are not aware of
the semi-hit TV series Gossip Girl, you might be better off. A silly, shallow, even condescending series
supposedly about people (especially young ones) with money and status has never
rung true in its four seasons (so far?) run.

Blake Lively, Chace
Crawford and others make up the world of the supposedly successful, spending
money, stabbing each other in the back, having sex of some kind and sill being
boring. This Complete Third Season set has 22 hour-long episodes that show how
past its prime the nighttime soap opera really is, though this is still very
marginally better than “reality TV” but not by much.
The Upper
East Side continues to harbor secrets and what happens there
apparently does not stay there thanks to the nebby title character (Kristen
Bell, who can be funny in front of the camera).
Maybe this is easier to get into when you start from the first season
(namely the first show), but it seems very tired and has none of the fun of a Dynasty or even Dallas, shows that at least knew what they were, while this one
apparently thinks it is more than it is: trash TV. Needless to say, this is for fans only, but
at least Warner Bros., is putting some money into the show, so it at least does
not look shoddy. Well, not much
considering everyone is like an animated mannequin.
The anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1 image is soft and
shot in digital High Definition video with color limits, motion blur, detail
issues and few good shots throughout, while the Dolby
Digital 5.1 mix fares better, but not by much.
You get some good surrounds, but not a great soundfield and dialogue is
too much in the center channel. Extras include a Gag Reel, Unaired Scenes,
Interactive Viewing on Episode 16 dubbed Gossip
Girl Mode (ooooooooh), two music videos and A Gossip Girl Fabulous Affair
featurette about throwing a party.
