LOST – The Complete Sixth Season/The Final Season (2009 – 2010/ABC/Disney Blu-ray)

They used to say that all good things come to an end, but more often lately, it has more akin to doing some to death until it is played out beyond belief and stretched out beyond recognition.  Whether it is to squeeze out maximum profits is besides the point, but the conclusion of a hit series does not have to be this way if the makers respect their audience, but LOST was a show that started out with some promise and energy before going down hill and becoming the unintentionally funny version of Gillian’s Island when all was said and done.  Without the actors being as good as they are, this would have been a total disaster.

Those familiar with the series don’t need a five-season recap and that would be telling for those who have not seen the show.  However, the basic arc of the story is that a plane crash lands on an island, supposedly by accident.  Then wild, deadly things start to happen and this slowly (and later in the series, we would say very slowly) culminates into a soap opera instead of the suspenseful action drama it started out as.  The weekly TV grind got to the show by the fourth season and this Complete Sixth Season set shows that they should have quit a few years ago.  We get 16 hours here and enough is enough.

The 1080p 1.78 X 1 digital High Definition image on all the shows can have some great moments of detail and even depth, yet darker scenes do not look as good as they should and the result is disappointing and not up to the best of some older season Blu-rays.  The DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) 16/48 5.1 mix on each show is not bad, but dialogue has sonic limits that should not be there, including being too much in the center channel.  This affects the soundfield and also disappoints.

Extras are a great stills section Blu-ray exclusive BD Live interactive features, as well as bloopers, audio commentaries, deleted scenes, the silly LOST in 8:15 – A Crash Course (see the show sped up!?!), and featurettes The New Man In Charge, A Hero’s Journey, See You In Another Life, Bro and THE END: Crafting A Final Season.
