We continue to enjoy the release of collections of movie
trailers on DVD by various labels and we now look at three titles that all have
an exploitation edge to them. First are
the two volumes (we hope so far) of trailers in the Horror genre from Cheezy

We have reviewed more of those titles than you might think
and that some of them survived and even made it to DVD is a plus, while a few
of them are on Blu-ray. Then there is the
Nikkatsu Roman Porno Trailer Collection
which features films we are far less likely to see, let alone cover. 38 trailers for these somewhat explicit and
sometimes violent erotic films from 1971 to 1988 are here and mirrored the XXX
movement in the U.S. in tales including rape fantasies (the girls?/the
rapists?/the audiences?), torture and comedies.
These “pink films” were sold as dramas and as realistic and the titles
were as basic as the films, including the likes of three Female Teacher titles, four Nurse
titles, four with Rape in the title
(three begin with it, one is it) and other suggestive titles you’ll have to see
for yourself as they would be unintentionally funny to repeat here. This collection shows us an alternate erotic
cinema few know about and some might want to take a look at. The studio made about 850 themselves and
distributed over a thousand in this period.
The 1.33 X 1 image on the Cheezy sets include some letterboxed trailers, including some
letterboxed incorrectly, while the Nikkatsu
set shows its various aspect ratio trailers in anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X
1/16 X 9 framing. Many are in 2.35 X 1
scope. The Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono in all
cases (some of the Nikkatsu are
simple stereo at best) can be rough and uneven, but are not bad throughout
overall in any of the cases, though the Nikkatsu
are a little clearer overall. Extras in
the Cheezy sets includes trailers
for other Cheezy releases and Intermission shorts, while Nikkatsu has a semi-censored erotic short called Ryoko’s
Lesbian Flight that is not that memorable and liner notes from “Behind
The Pink Curtain” author Jasper Sharp.
