Walking Vengeance (aka Solo Quiero Caminar aka Just Walking/ aka I Only Want To Walk/2008/Maya DVD)

A mixed attempt at a gangster heist thriller, Agustin Diaz Yanes’ Walking Vengeance (2008) has Spanish gangsters going at each other, with the ambitious Felix (José Maria Yazpik) planning to make more dirty money than he already is by striking a deal with Korean gangsters.  However, four women intend to rob him big-time, but he has ideas of his own.  In the crossfire is Gabriel (Diego Luna of Frida and Milk) who is a best friend of Felix and a gangster in his own right with his own reputation, a man who will have to make some tough choices while the rest of these players play for keeps.

The four women (in the Set It Off tradition) are played by Ariadna Gil (Pan’s Labyrinth), Victoria Abril, Elena Anaya and Pilar Lopez de Ayala, who along with the other cast make this more fun to watch than the script that goes from smart to predictable to punctuated with moments of sex and violence you would never see in most similar Hollywood product.  Unfortunately, the genre is so played out and the only other thing the film has going for it are its location work in Mexico and Spain.  Unfortunately, we don’t get too much more new, but it is worth a look for the actors if nothing else.  I hope to see them all again soon.

The anamorphically enhanced 2.35 X 1 image was shot in the Super 35mm film format by Director of Photography Paco Femenia (Alatriste) and though it is stylized intentionally, this is still a little softer than I would have liked.  There are still some great location shots, though.  The Dolby Digital Spanish 5.1 mix is a little better with a good soundfield and decent dialogue recording.  The only extra is a Director’s Interview that should have been longer than a few minutes.
