The Big Bang Theory: The Complete First Season (2007 – 2008) + The Complete Second Season (2008 – 2009/Warner Blu-ray w/DVD Set and UltraViolet Copy)

When Big Bang Theory arrived, I was an instant fan and the show just got better and better.  Writing about the show as it hit DVD a few years ago, I was one of its first vocal supporters as these links will show:

The Complete First Season (2007 – 2008)

The Complete Second Season (2008 – 2009)

Now the first two seasons of the show are arriving on Blu-ray and actually includes the DVDs from those previous sets, plus now include UltraViolet Copy.  This is a smart move because the series deserves this top treatment and is now popular enough to get it.  It has since become the most successful new comedy in syndication since Seinfeld and continues to go strong.

So how much of an improvement it is from the DVDs?

The 1080p 1.78 X 1 digital High Definition image transfers for both season sets show an improvement in detail that is very welcome, more depth where applicable and a complete color range the anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1 image DVD versions just cannot deliver and are the same as those previous DVD sets.  They were fine for their time and the format, but are only here for convenience when you only have a DVD drive and not Blu-ray access.

The DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) 5.1 lossless mixes on both sets are an upgrade in warmth and fullness, but sound can still be towards the front speakers and dialogue more in the center channel to the point of being almost monophonic.  However, that is still better than the passable, lossy Dolby Digital 5.1 versions on the DVDs and there are some points where the whole soundfield kicks in.

Extras are the same as they were for the previous sets, though again UltraViolet copy has been added.  They retain their respective Gag Reels and two Making Of featurettes for their respective seasons.

If you are as big a fan of the show as I am, the upgrades of The Complete First and Second Season sets are worth it.  After all, The Big Bang Theory is a TV comedy classic!
