And now
for some sports releases...
As
another one of our occasional encounters with the subject of Golf, Carl Jackson: Through The Eyes Of A Caddy
(2012) is a pretty good entry with the man who has been a top rate caddy for 51
years at the Augusta Masters and Ben Crenshaw’s for 36, as the cover accurately
tells us. After watching the
57-minutes-long program, it is obvious the man is very knowledgeable on the
subject, loves golf and understands it in a second-nature way many players wish
they did.
In the
cases where we have seen advice given on the subject, this is as competent as
we could hope for and as thorough as you could get for a program this
length. In direct comparison, this is as
logical and authentic as any previous instructional on the subject we have seen
as well and is recommended if you like golf or are just curious on how the game
really works. Nice that Jackson made this one.
The
anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1 image is a new video shoot, but is a little
soft, has more motion blur than expected and can be choppy in parts when it
comes to editing. The frame rate can be
choppy too. The lossy Dolby Digital 2.0
sound is simple stereo and may have some location audio issues, but is at least
clean, despite being a low-volume recording.
Be careful of volume switching on this one and you should be fine.
There are
no extras, but golf fans will likely really want this volume.
Then we
have The Essential Games Of The
Milwaukee Brewers which is yet another MLB baseball DVD box set from
A&E featuring four key games of a given team. This one includes 2 from 1982 (the ALCS Game
5 Pennant Clincher and World Series Game 4 Victory), 2008 NL Wild Card Clincher
and 2011 NLDS Game 5 Walk-Off Win.
Except in general compilations, this is the first time we have seen a
title on this team and looks like they have fans as serious as any other
team. Volumes like this allow us to get
to know these teams at their best making it possibly the best ongoing DVD
sports series on home video.
The early
games are in a 1.33 X 1 frame, while the newer games are anamorphically enhanced
1.78 X 1 presentations and both are as good as they are going to be in this
format. The 2011 games are obviously
from HD sources, but a little soft, while the older analog video is as good as
it is likely to look and all are here in lossy Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo that is
just fine.
Extras
include Robin Yount: Hometown Hero, Harvey’s Wallbangers: 1982 Brewers, 1982
Brewers Clinch AL East clip, Juan Nieves Closes Out No-Hitter, Sexton &
Burnitz: 3 Home Runs Each in One Game, Ben Sheets Strikes Out 18, This Week In
Baseball: 2008 Brewers, This Week In Baseball: 2009 Brewers, 2011 NLDS Game 5
Post-Game Celebration and Paul Braun’s Home Run Game.
