Ripper Street (2012/BBC Blu-ray)

Picture: A-     Sound: B     Extras: A     Episodes: A-

After failing to capture one of London's most legendary killers, Jack the Ripper, Chief Inspector Reid and his notorious H Division in Ripper Street.  Tirelessly, they now patrol and protect the slums and neighborhoods of Whitechapel.  As the police brings law and order they must not only keep the peace, solve murders, but quiet the fear left behind by the legacy Jack the Ripper, but when a new dead body turns up in the streets, is it his return?  At the turn of the century, it is the start of the new age, the industrial age, or is it a new age of terror?

Based on London's most feared and well-known serial killer legend that was never caught, Inspector Reid still heads H Division, not only lives with the disgrace of failing to catch Jack the Ripper, but is haunted by his own past and the lost of his daughter.  He is teamed here with Sargent Drake, his fierce man of arms, he is a former Sargent in the army and struggles with his own demons after the war.  And finally Captain Jackson, an American Yankee, former Pinkerton who now acts as Reid's chief of surgeon, forensics, and science.  Separately, they are all looked down by their former pears and co-workers, but together they become the unstoppable sword of justice and shield of the law in the London streets.

This series is a fictitious take on England's legend, as the only character that actually existed was Chief Inspector Reid, all other characters were works of fiction.  The series was set in the changing of Europe's industrial age, an age when people were trying to move from superstition to science, but with rapid industrialization, it most often comes with it's shares of crimes and violence, the rich and the poor.  Characters and costuming was excellently played and the setting was similar to the recent Sherlock Holmes’ films with Robert Downey Jr.

The 1080p 1.78 X 1 digital High Definition image transfers are consistently solid, stylish and look just fine throughout.  The DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) 2.0 Stereo lossless track has some Pro Logic-type surrounds and sounds very good here, though some will wish this was 5.1 and it is well-recorded enough.  Extras include Ultraviolet Copy for PC, PC portable and iTunes compatible devices, while the discs add Can Jack the Ripper be caught with modern forensic science? featurette, London Calling: Whitechapel tour of modern Whitechapel and setting for Ripper Street, inside look on cast, characters & production team and trailers.
