Foyle's War – Set 6 (2010/Acorn Media DVD Set)

Picture: B-     Sound: B-     Extras: D     Episodes: A-

Chief Superintendent Inspector Christopher Foyle is called to service once more.  Set in Hastings, Sussex in the immediate aftermath of WWII, with few good men around (literally) and most are still returning from the war, Foyle takes up the gauntlet of police chief, postponing his long awaited (and deserved) retirement, because no one else could or would solve the murder, much less stand for justice.  Foyle's case mostly involves with crimes after the war from those who would take advantage of war in international policies, corruption, and greed.

Foyle has the tiresome job of solving murder and keeping the order when all he wants to do is retire, but with his quiet sense of justice, level mind and logical reasoning he is more often underestimated by those who would think of getting away with murder.  Set in the post WWII period, many of the leaders are corrupt, very few care about the country or it's poor populace, and they ungraciously shove the job of keeping law and order onto Foyle (because someone in government has to actually do their job).  Foyle more often while dealing with the murders reveals war profiteers and while the war is over, the war against discrimination, racism, greed, and political corruption is far from over.

This is another great British murder mystery series, each series is 3 episodes long (see the previous volumes reviewed elsewhere on this site) and about 90 minutes a telefilm-length episode.  It creates well a post WWII England, just recovering from the ravages of that time, filled with citizens trying to get back to a normal life, returning GIs, and just old corrupt men in the government (except for the main character, Foyle).  Most murders in the series have a military involvement somehow and become more difficult to catch for the lack of not only modern investigation, but cover ups for 'security' or political reasons.  Foyle's War refers not to the post war but to his own personal war against injustice.  The only extras include trailers and the picture and sound are on par with the previous DVD sets.
