Perry Mason – The Final Season/Season 9, Volume One (1965/CBS DVD Set)

Picture: C     Sound: C     Extras: D     Episodes: C+

Perry Mason is back in the Final Season of the long-running series, he is a public defender for justice, he takes the cases people have given up on.  Between the crime scene, murder and the court house, Mason always separates the guilty from the innocent. From blackmail, theft, espionage to revenge more often Perry's client may start out as guilty.  With the help of his faithful secretary Della and his trusty private detective Paul Drake they find the clues that point to the real killer.

Mason (has still) never lost a case.  No matter if they are poor, as long as Perry Mason is on your side he will fight gangsters, thieves, police, district attorney or even the law and win.  He is often aid by his partner, the handsome P.I. Paul Drake who sniffs out lost evidence and uses his countless contacts to find key information to the cases, which then is relayed usually just in the nick of time through his secretary Della Street.  Often, Mason's nemesis is either the D.A. or the police chief whom tries to prove Perry wrong in court, but in truth they play devil's advocate for each other in the courtroom.

This approach worked for the whole series, so they were not going to change it in the end, especially with syndication to consider.  The character often brought in on a case when a mysterious dead body turns up, usually there are a number false leads, people who all have a reason to be guilty, but through the use of shrew/clever questioning and cross examination they usually cause the true guilty party to break down, self incriminate themselves.  In this 9th Season’s first half, Mason not only battles court cases, but international cases, public laws and policies.  While it still mainly uses deductive reasoning it also begins to show and use more scientific evidences to solve cases.  Often at the end of the episode, the characters gather around and they go over what was the key evidence that was the turning point of the case.

The black and white 1.33 X 1 image is a little muddier throughout than usual and the lossy Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono is a little lower and aged than expected, but these are still very watchable.  There are no extras.
