Dexter – The Seventh Season (2012/Showtime/CBS Blu-rays)

I wouldn’t say Dexter has overstayed its welcome, but the plot is getting a bit thin.  There are only so many “close calls” audiences can accept, before you start to question the capabilities of those around him.

**NOTE! Some Spoilers Below!

In Season Seven Dexter returns after a shocking Season 6 cliffhanger, in which Deb (finally!) catches her serial killer brother in the act.  Something that many thought would have happened seasons ago; especially since in the book series she pretty much knows all along.  Moving forward in the season (after Dexter’s idiotic excuses to cover up getting caught red handed) we find Deb learning the truth of Dexter’s murderous past; and subsequently not doing too well with it.  She is at a moral crossroads and instead of turning her beloved brother in she treats him like a recovering alcoholic, concurrently trying to curb his urges.  That doesn’t work too well and eventually she moves on to turning a blind eye.  Also this season we find Dexter mixed up with the Russian mob, as well as a possible ‘black widow’ serial killer that he falls head over heels for.  The entire cast is back for this season and whereas it is not as stunning as previous seasons, I did find it enjoyable; though the ending I found quite perturbing.

Deb is just out of control annoying (as always), but I will be interested to see how they wrap up the series in its Eighth and Final Season.

The technical features are virtually unchanged and on par with the previous season Blu-ray release; not perfect but still very good.   The 1080p AVC encoded 1.78 X 1 High Definition image is nearly flawless with bright, saturating colors that portray the Miami backdrop splendidly.  All of this is on top of the fact that the show consistently demonstrates a crisp, clean, clear image.  The soundtrack (a Dolby True HD track) is also nicely done and comes through with ease; from the eerie music to the precise dialogue all is wonderful.

Extras aren’t so great (as always) with only a view promos for other series being available here.  Perhaps we will get a host of extras for the Eighth Season.
