Albert Collins (Ohne Filter show)

Picture: C+     Sound: C+     Extras: C+     Concert: B-

Albert Collins is one of the most noted Blues musicians and also known as “The Master of The Telecaster” in circles, so it was interesting to finally get the opportunity to experience his work in his October 27, 1988 taping of Germany’s Ohne Filter show.  The songs are as follows:

1)     Sack Of Wine

2)     Listen Here

3)     Tired Man

4)     Lights On, Nobody Home

5)     Mastercharge

6)     Blackcat Bone

7)     I Ain’t Drunk

8)     I Got That Feeling

9)     Frosty (involving the guest of the same name)

Fans will be happy a concert of Collins is even on DVD and it is a solid Blues set, but it does not offer any surprises or classic moments.  It is a consistent set and the musicianship is unquestionable, but if you are not a Blues fan, you may not be as intrigued.  Either way, it is proof of why Collins is so popular, because he is for real.

The full frame PAL image is a bit soft and fuzzy, showing its age, but is color consistent enough to enjoy.  The Dolby Digital 5.1 AC-3 mix is not that much better than the clearer PCM Stereo mix, both also showing the age of the recording, which offers somewhat of a lack of clarity versus newer concerts in the series.  The extras are the usual biography of the music act, as is on all Ohne Filter DVDs, as well as the same engineer interview, web link, producer interview, and guide to many other Ohne Filter concerts on DVD.  Not bad.
