North America (2013/Gaiam Vivendi Blu-ray Set)

Picture: B Sound: B- Extras: B Episodes: A-

North America is a new nature TV Mini-Series that has some of the most beautiful to most harshest land in the world, from forest, mountains to desserts. Showing it's changing season, freezing winters to scorching summers test all life forms, from the smallest bugs to migrating herds see their amazing abilities to adapt into the world where they are born in. Only the strong survives and dares to call this land their home.

See the wild frontier of America, it's majestic mountains, endless fields, and all the things that make America so beautiful, dangerous and home to so many. Narrated here by Tom Selleck. Few places you can find all the terrain the world has to offer in one country. Here, life has evolved, as all animals need to survive, the ones that die in turn help entire ecosystems live, from having the ability to hunt and catch prey to surviving harsh winters or long dry spells, life finds a way to stay alive.

If you like BBC's Planet Earth, then you will like this series. While on a smaller scale, they show how the animals and plants of North America survive. Some differences about the series is it seems more tone down in comparison, and they forget to show the human impact and how they are effecting some of these places. Also, there is the occasional is rock and roll music in the background (as if rock and roll is the symbol for North America).

The 1080i 1.78 X 1 digital High Definition image was shot in HD throughout and is very consistent throughout with good color and decent detail for the format, while the lossy Dolby Digital 5.1 mix is not bad, but this set needed a lossless sound codec. Extras include a 32-page booklet inside the Blu-ray case, while the discs add a Filmmaker's Commentary, atmospheric audio sans narration, photo gallery, and top ten places of North America.
