Showgirls 2: Penny's From Heaven (2011/Wild Eye/MVD DVD)

Picture: D Sound: C Extras: B Main Program: C+

All that Penny ever wanted was to dance in Hollywood, to be a showgirl, without any training like all dreamers, they dream of becomes stars. But in order to become famous they will need to do anything to stand in the lime light, including stripping, dancing naked, and having sex with any director or rich and powerful person who will help their career. In the end, it's how bad you want it.

In Rena Riffel's Showgirls 2: Penny's from Heaven (2011), Penny (played by the director!!!) is a over ambitious blonde with Double D-sized breasts and too much eye shadow who dreams of becoming a star on the show Stardancer. After getting robbed, she hitchhikes to Hollywood with bunch of robbers (and somehow manages to get their stash). In Hollywood, she sells herself (and her body) and is pimped out to get a role from the director. Even when she is on stage, she has to watch out for rivals and understudies who would like nothing more than to steal her potential roles. In the end, is it worth being a star if only means you become a whore?

I don't know if this is comic parody or travesty of a homage to the original Paul Verhoeven Showgirls (no gem to begin with; 1995), but it seems to say all girls who dream of Hollywood end up treated no better than prostitutes, and in the end they are wiser but not happier. It is like a low budget version of the original, with it's only saving grace more massive amounts or sex, nudity and see though clothing.

The anamorphically enhanced image is awful and lossy Dolby Digital sound awful, so it will never be mistaken technically for the older film. Extras include lost footage (?), behind the scenes, hot dog scene remix and director's commentary track.

Before this release, the original film became a musical stage comedy, but we have actually reviewed the first film four times so far (!!!) and you can read more about the original film by using the search engine or seeing our coverage of the U.S. Blu-ray at this link:
