Cars - Ultimate Collector's Edition (2006/Disney/Pixar Blu-ray 3D w/Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy)

Picture: B+/A-/B Sound: A-/A-/B Extras: A- Film: B

We have reviewed this film several times in the past and the material has not changed. The beautiful story remains, coupled with an excellent Blu-ray presentation that gives most feature films (animated and otherwise) a run for their money. This time around we are treated to an all new 3D Blu-ray presentation that adds a layer of depth to the film not previously seen.

The picture on the Blu-ray is as fine as ever and the 3D Blu-ray looks excellent as well, but not quite up to the quality of the standard Blu-ray. The 3D in a MVC Encoded MPEG-4, 2.39 X 1 Widescreen most definitely adds a dimension to the film not seen on the standard Blu-ray, but nothing outstanding. I would say the 3D adds depth, but lacks those pop off the screen moments. To a degree I should be seeing cars zooming toward the screen, but not much (if any) of that is seen here. Also some elements/details are lost during the darker moments; even with vivid colors, inky blacks, and nice contrast. The textures are still rich, but lack the pop that is seen in newer Pixar films like that of the recently reviewed Monsters University.

The 2D Blu-ray remains as stunning as ever. This is the same AVC-Encoded MPEG-4, 1080p 2.39 X 1 Widescreen transfer as previously released on Blu-ray; and is even better than the 3D release. The colors are vivid, the blacks are dark and framing, and every moment is near perfection. Pixar films are of the highest quality and truly are demo material.

The audio sounds better than ever and in this case for both the Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D have been upgraded to a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD track. The film sounded wonderful before, but now in Dolby TrueHD it is even better with a rounder sound that encompasses the entire sound stage. Prioritization is perfect with a balance about it that wasn't quite as good before. The zoom of the race track, the roar of the engines, the energy of the music, and spot on dialogue are only some of the elements that make this audio so good. The entire speaker range is utilized throughout.

The DVD is the same as that previously released and is a downgrade when compared to the beautiful Blu-ray releases.
