If
you're a fan of British comedy and old men behaving badly, then your
sides will be split watching Roy Clarke's Last of the Summer Wine:
Vintage 2001.
This
hilarious season of the world's longest running sitcom pits us with
bad situation after bad situation. A driver who can't tell his right
from left, the gift of an oversized lawn ornament, an outlandish
rumor turned reality of a tiger running loose, and more.
The
first hilarious disc gives us Getting Barry's Goat, The Art
of the Shorts Story, The Missing Bus of Mrs Avery, Hey
Big Vendor, Enter the Hawk, and Gnome and Away. My
favorite episode is the last one on the disc, Gnome and Away,
where the pair must cart around a huge lawn gnome as a gift.
The
second disc features A Hair of the Blonde That Bit You, A
White Sweater and a Solicitor's Letter, Why is Barry at an
Angle?, The Coming of the Beast, and Potts in Pole
Position.
The
humor is pretty dry and innocent. I wouldn't necessarily suggest
this release for your average American viewing audience as it is kind
of slow paced and mainly dealing with miscommunication and the
downfalls of getting older.
The
16 X 9/1.78 X 1 anamorphic image presentation is standard for a DVD
release and provides a lossy Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo English track.
There is also an optional subtitles function for the deaf and hard of
hearing. Some of the episodes including The Missing Bus of Mrs.
Avery has harsh yellow skin tones that give the film an almost
aged look. A Blu-ray transfer of this release would definitely be a
fixer of many of the transfer issues.
Special
Features include The 2001 Christmas Special: Potts in
Pole Position.
