Son Of God (2014/Fox Blu-ray w/DVD)

Picture: B/C Sound: A-/B- Extras: B Main Program: B+

Take a look at the story of Jesus, from his birth to his death and resurrection. How in the time of prophets, why was Jesus so important? He walked among the people performing miracles, healing the sick and lame. The Pharisees, fearful of their waning power, framed and lead to crucification an innocent man. And the man who then transcended death and started a new age of hope. Son Of God (2014) is another retelling of the Jesus story and the things that lead up to his crucification derived from the recent Bible TV series reviewed elsewhere on this site.

It paints Pontius Pilate as a tyrant governor from Rome who kept the peace on the point of a sword. While the Jewish community prayed for a Messiah, a warrior king to save them and punish their oppressors. Instead, they got Jesus, a man who taught peace, love and forgiveness. The Pharisees soon became afraid of Jesus' teachings because he showed the world how they were really bigots and zealots, who did anything to maintain their power over the common masses. The Pharisees then realized they were really not that different than Pontius Pilate, who oppressed them in the first place, and they were just as evil as him.

This was a beautiful retelling of the life of Jesus Christ with beautiful special effects and music worthy of a box office hit. While it mainly focused on the life of Jesus, his teachings and his miracles, it did tell as much on his disciples, Jews and Romans. It followed the Bible accurately, but from a more historical point of view there were a few historical errors (namely Jesus was not a white man, and who the people were). But still it was worth while film to watch if you are into religious films or like productions.

The 1080p 2.35 X 1 digital High Definition image can look good, but the original 1.78 X 1 frame has been compromised and composition can have parts of the image cut off oddly. The anamorphically enhanced DVD makes this worse with its softness. The DTS-HD (Master Audio) MA lossless 5.1 mix is stronger and uncompromised on the Blu-ray, but the lossy Dolby Digital 5.1 mix in the DVD is very weak by comparison. Extras include Song of God: Reborn, From The Set: The Passion, and Faith Into Practice.
