Hell On Wheels: Season Three (2013/E1 Blu-ray Set)

Picture: A Sound: A Extras: B Episodes: B+

You can add Hell on Wheels to the list of fantastic achievements that AMC has undergone over recent years. This show is action packed with incredible leads, high production value, and sweeping landscapes that really shine on this Blu-ray set release. Having recently reviewed two seasons of the classic show Rawhide for this site recently, it's nice to see the evolution of the Western television drama. This is definitely the best series of its kind since Deadwood. Lucky for us, this release is packed with great extras and a transfer to die for!

Former Confederate soldier Cullen Bohannon (Anson Mount) made a home in Hell on Wheels while hunting down the men responsible for killing his family. Now, following the Indian Attack that destroyed the railroad settlement, Cullen has reshaped his lust for revenge into a burning ambition to take control of the Union Pacific and complete its drive across the country. Also starring Common the show reminds me a lot of Django Unchained in its humor and ruthless violence.

The ten episode season sports a highly detailed high definition transfer captured in 1080p (in an 1.78:1 aspect ratio) with a glorious DTS-HD MA lossless 5.1 track that dominates your home entertainment system. The transfer is highly crisp and detailed, really bringing out the rough Western landscape and is perfectly balanced between detailed snow sequences and sandy desert scenes. Subtitles on the disc are in English and English SDH. Total runtime for the series is 430 minutes.

Extras on the disc are A Look at Season 3, Where Season 2 Left Off, Four Behind-The-Scenes Featurettes, and Ten Inside The Episode Featurettes.

This is definitely a show you don't want to miss if you are a fan of Tombstone or any other Western for that matter. Recommended!
