Antboy (2013/Cinedigm DVD)

Picture: B- Sound: C Extras: D Film: C+

After 12 year old Pella was bitten by a lab super ant, he finds himself with the powers of an ant, and becomes Antboy. Overnight, he becomes zero to hero, along with his nerdy comic book superhero loving friend Wilhelm they begin to plan, train and stop crime everywhere, but when they discover he's not the only one with powers, a super villain named 'The Flea' threatens to destroy his hometown and kidnaps the girl of his dreams. Will Pella and his friends be able to stop a real super villain and get their homework done on time?

Every 10-year-old boy dreams of having powers and being special, especially when they are bullied and made fun of by others. Pella hits the jackpot when he finds himself suddenly with the powers of an Ant, to lift things 50 times his weight, and climb on walls (also pee acid). At first he uses his powers to become famous to get girls, then learns that a hero isn't about fame, fortune or powers, it's about having the heart of a hero, to have the courage to stand up for his friends and to do the right thing.

Ask Hasselbalch's Antboy (2013, made in Denmark!) has already been enough of a success overseas that a sequel is on the way, but despite good intents and its pleasantness, this was like watching Spiderman, but with a 10-year-old protagonist instead. While the costumes, superpowered action and special effect were OK, the film was mainly comical and appropriate for all children. In the end all kids movies is about friendship, teamwork, and believing in yourself. It does not look bad in its anamorphically enhanced presentation, but the lossy Dolby Digital sound is weak and there are no extras.
