Haven - The Complete Fourth Season (2013/E1 Blu-ray)

Picture: B Sound: B Extras: B Episodes: C-

A SyFy Channel original series, Haven is back with its fourth season on Blu-ray disc and is pretty underwhelming. The core story of the show is based on The Colorado Kid by Stephen King but after so many seasons, the show has gotten a little too corny and soap opera-y with an intense amount of cliffhangers that make you ponder why you are even watching it most of the time. The confrontational characters are all bad willed but never quite pull the trigger (literally there are many scenes throughout the season when guns are almost fired... but not) and on the whole, Haven is obviously starting to struggle to maintain connection with its original Stephen King roots. Some of the digital effects are okay at times and overall the concept is fine it just feels to me like an X-Files knockoff mixed with a soap opera.

This series follows the shrewd and confident FBI agent Audrey Parker (Emily Rose) who arrives at the small town of Haven, Maine on a routine case. Before long, her natural curiosity lands her in the epicenter of activity in this curious enclave, which turns out to be a longtime refuge for people that are affected by a range of supernatural afflictions known as The Troubles. As the townspeople's dormant abilities begin to express themselves, s@!t hits the fan and Audrey has to step up to help. Partnered with local residents Nathan Wuornos (Lucas Bryant) and Duke Crocker (Eric Balfour), Audrey starts to realize that (due to mysterious links to her past) she's the town's last hope at saving itself from its own supernatural infestation.

Episodes on the disc include Fallout, Survivors, Bad Blood, Lost and Found, The New Girl, Countdown, Lay Me Down, Crush, William, The Trouble with Troubles, Shot in the Dark, When the Bough Breaks and The Lighthouse.

The picture and sound on the disc are fabulous with a 1080p High Definition transfer with a widescreen aspect ratio of 1.78:1 and a lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 audio channel that blows the original broadcast out of the water. English subtitles are also on the disc for the deaf and hard of hearing.

Total Running Time is 572 minutes.

Extras are plentiful and the set also comes with a little comic book that features a treatment of the Mara character in the season finale and her backstory entitled Haven: The Beginning. On the discs- supplemental features include:

Audio Commentary on "The Lighthouse" features Mat McGuinness and Gabrielle Stanton.
