Getting
On is
a new series by HBO that is based on a British series of the same
name and produced by the folks that brought you Big
Love.
It's a satirical commentary on Hospital Senior Citizen care and
features Laurie Metcaif as Dr. Jenna James who is the director of
Medicine, Niecy Nash as Denise (DiDi) Ortley who is new to the job,
Alex Borstein (Family
Guy)
as Dawn Forchette who is the head ward Nurse and Mel Rodriguez as
Patsy De La Serda who is the new Supervising Nurse. The show is
funny but at the same time depressing as the characters admit and
tend to patients while making their job seem like any other. The
chemistry between Metcaif and Borstein is spot on and the two play
off the serious work in the profession and humor pretty well.
There
are six episodes in the first season entitled:
Born
on the Fourth of July
- DiDi arrives for work in the ward and Dawn shows her around when
not deferring to Dr. James, who is demanding more stool samples for
her research study.
If
You're Going To San Francisco
- The new supervising nurse, Patsy, arrives as DiDi and Dawn have to
deal with a verbally abusive patient
Make
Someone Happy
- A lusty male patient (Harry Dean Stanton) comes to the ward. DiDi
is made to apologize to Patsy for her misconstrued joke to him.
Dumped
- A patient's dumped on the ward; Phyllis Marmatan (Molly Shannon)
discovers her mother's true state of health; Dr. James has to go
along with Patsy's CARES program.
Nightshift
- As DiDi tries to cope with a busy night shift, Dr. James stops by
with her husband and a drunk Dawn wanders in after fighting with
Patsy.
The
Concert
- Phyllis' mother seems to be slipping towards death; DiDi tries to
get the money that Dr. James - still angling to leave Mt. Palms -
owes her husband for his work on her driveway; Dawn reveals having
anal sex with Patsy the night before.
Sound
and Picture on the disc is fabulous with a 1080p high definition
image in 16 X 9/1.78 X 1 widescreen aspect ratio. The sound is also
great with a powerful DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track. Subs on the
disc are in English, French, and Spanish. Extras include Deleted
Scenes
and a hilarious Gag
Reel.
All
in all if you are a fan of Medical dramas (or comedies) then this is
a pretty solid show with good writing and performances.
