Mondo Cannibal (2004/Intervision DVD)

Gut Munching Terror Unleashed!

If you have seen Cannibal Holocaust then you have seen one of the most intense films ever made (which featured even the deaths of actual animals in its production), but from the director of Hell of the Living Dead and Rats (which I reviewed elsewhere on the site) Bruno Mattei (though he is billed as Vincent Dawn) comes Mondo Cannibal (also known as Cannibal World) - which in many ways is heavily inspired by Holocaust. The Italian Cannibal genre is not for most members of the American audience. These films are brutal and full of nudity, bad language, and sleaze that could offend most.

The network where the famous anchorwoman Grace Forsyte (Helena Wagner) works is collapsing and she would do everything to regain the favor of the audience, therefore she convinces her professional team to go to the Amazon jungle for a sensational scoop about the cannibals and they end up getting a little too close for comfort.

This DVD edition, though a little light on extras, is a nice addition to your horror film library. The film is presented for the first time uncut and uncensored in America so it has that going for it. I would say that in terms of production design and looks its aims to be a seventies' style grindhouse film in the way of look and feel is a success. The question the film raises is - who is the real villain - the Americans or the Cannibals?

The standard definition image on the disc is fine for this cheap digitally shot film - I don't necessarily need to own this film on Blu-ray for the sack of sound or quality. In fact, I think the DVD format is perfect for it. The image is in standard definition with a 4:3 (1.33:1 widescreen aspect ratio and a 2.0 lossy Dolby Digital stereo track.

Only extras on the disc are Trailers.

In The Land Of The Cannibals (2004/Intervision DVD)

Captured, Tortured, Eaten Alive!

The late Italian sleaze maestro Bruno Mattei (billed again here as Vincent Dawn, but also on this film as Martin Miller in some cases, apparently) was the infamous director of Hell of the Living Dead, Caged Women, Rats: Night of Terror and SS Extermination Love Camp brazenly combines Cannibal Holocaust and Predator for a whole new level of green inferno perversion and an interesting entry in the Cannibal sub genre.

When a team of hard-ass commandos venture deep into the Amazon jungle to rescue a senator's hot daughter, they'll trigger a bloodbath of flesh-stripping, gut-ripping, limb-hacking, stock footage and sexual brutality. Cindy Matic and Claudio Morales star in this mind-boggling hybrid - also known as Land of Death and released in Japan as Cannibal Holocaust 3 is now presented uncut and uncensored for the first time ever in America!

Much like Mondo Cannibal, this film is nothing more than cheap entertainment at its best, a glorified ripoff of better films (like Cannibal Holocaust and Predator) and succeeds at being interesting shot and executed on a shoestring budget.

The standard definition image on the disc is fine for this cheap digitally shot film - I don't necessarily need to own this film on Blu-ray for the sack of sound or quality either and yes, I again think the DVD format is perfect for it. The image is in standard definition with a 4:3/1.33:1 aspect ratio and a lossy 2.0 Dolby Digital stereo track.
