Black Sails: The Complete First Season (2014/Starz/Anchor Bay Blu-ray Set)

Picture: B+ Sound: A Extras: B Episodes: C+

Ahoy Maytees! Get ready to walk the plank with Starz's exceptional release of Black Sails on Blu-ray disc! Presented in very cool 3D packaging with collectible sleeve layout and artwork, this show is not to be missed for older fans of Pirate fair or fans of other shows such as Spartacus. Executive Produced by Michael Bay, the show packs impressive production value and special effects but is surprisingly quite low on celebrity cameos... couldn't they have paid for Shane.

Set roughly two decades before the events of Treasure Island and during the Golden Age of Piracy, the feared Captain Flint brings on a younger crew member as they fight for the survival of New Providence Island.

According to the first episode, In 1715, West Indies, the pirates of New Providence Island threaten maritime trade in the region. The laws of every civilized nation declare them hostis humani generis or... enemies of all mankind. In response, the pirates adhere to a doctrine of their own which unsurprisingly is WAR against the world! The eight episode first season focuses on the hunt for the Spanish treasure galleon Urca de Lima.

Real life pirates that are fictionalized in the show include Anne Bonny, Benjamin Hornigold, Jack Rackham, and Charles Vane. Black Sails stars Toby Stephens, Hannah New, Luke Arnold, Jessica Parker Kennedy, and Tom Hopper as William (Bones) Manderly.

Sound and Picture on the disc are exceptional with a crisp 1080p high definition transfer and a widescreen presentation of 1.78:1. Sound on the disc is mind blowing in a crisp, lossless Dolby TrueHD 7.1 mix that will amaze. There are also additional Spanish and French tracks in Dolby Surround 2.0.

Extras include:

Black Sails: An Inside Look

Dressed To Kill

Pirate Camp

Folklore Is Finished

A Place In History

Building the Behemoth

If you are looking for something a little darker than Pirates of the Caribbean then this may be worth picking up.
