Going Under (2004/Blue Underground Blu-ray)

Picture: B+ Sound: B+ Extras: B Film: B-

Different strokes are for different folks as we learn with this Blue Underground release of the intense S and M psycho drama Going Under, now available for the first time on Blu-ray with stunning sound, picture and a variety of never before seen extras. The unnerving film is not for everyone and is similar to Secretary, Videodrome or the upcoming 50 Shades of Grey in terms of an intense and wildly painful sexual story.

Going Under is about a married man Peter (Roger Rees) and a partnered dominatrix named Suzanne (Geno Lechner) who form a personal relationship and begin seeing each other outside her workplace. As their relationship gets more and more personal, the drama in Peter's life soon spirals out of control as Suzanne dominates (excuse the pun) his personal relationship and expands his horizons.

The film was co-written and directed by psychotherapist Eric Werthman, was praised for giving an in-depth look at the emotions involved in a sadomasochistic relationship and received mixed reactions to the clinical approach of the film, influenced by co-writer/director Werthman's background. The release is perfect timing for the expected Grey-mania.

Sound and Picture on the disc are top notch with a high definition transfer in 1080p and a widescreen aspect ratio of 1.85:1 showing exceptionally good color and grain that is natural and just right. The audio on this release far surpasses prior releases, however with a crisp remastered, lossless DTS-HD 5.1 surround sound mix and a DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) 2.0 Stereo mix also available on the disc as well, you cannot go wrong.

There are a wealth of very interesting extras too, including:

Audio Commentary by the Writer/Director and Star Roger Rees

Pushing The Boundaries - Interviews with Roger Rees and Geno Lechner

NYC Black and Blue Ball

Theatrical and Teaser Trailers

All in all, Blue Underground has done another great job in bringing this darkly unusual film to life like never before. Recommended!
