Mama's
Family, a spinoff sitcom of The Carol Burnett Show, is one
of my favorite sitcoms of all time for reasons I'm not sure. It's so
genuine to me and showcases simple comedy amongst a dysfunctional
redneck family. Growing up in West Virginia, my Grandmother used to
always watch this show with us on her old black and white television
(that was resting on top of a non working television) and it always
brings back warm memories watching it. Having covered Season Four
in a prior review (elsewhere on this site) and soon Season Six,
this show continues to make me laugh every time with dead on
squabbling hilarity over the most mundane of matters.
This
a highlight disc of six classic episodes from season four including
Educating Mama, Zirconia's Are A Girl's Best Friend,
The Sins of the Mother, Mama on Jeopardy!, Mama Goes
Hawaiian (Part 1) and Mama Goes Hawaiian (Part 2).
In
these hand-selected episodes, viewers will see Bubba and Mama
beginning night school - although the first assignment reminds her of
the reason she dropped out to begin with; Mama getting hooked on
Raytown's version of the Home Shopping Network, the K-RAY
Teleshopper, and the family's aversion therapy used to break the
spell; and Mama's appearance on Jeopardy!, in which she both
kisses Alex Trebek on the lips and wins a trip to Hawaii! Guest
Stars include Alex Trebek and Barney Martin.
The
show has never looked better than it does here on DVD (from the
standard definition master analog videotapes) with a standard
definition image that captures the original 4:3 aspect ratio of the
original television broadcast. The sound is fine with a simple,
lossy Dolby 2.0 Stereo surround mix. No extras are on this release,
however.
If
you aren't willing to shell out the cash for the Complete Season
Four then this truly is a collection of the best episodes of the
season. I would suggest getting the full seasons but you can never
have too much Mama's Family!
