No Tears For The Dead (2014/CJ Entertainment Blu-ray)

Picture: B+ Sound: B+ Extras: B Film: B

No Tears For the Dead (2014) has plenty of death and tears and is a sharply directed action film written and directed by Jeong-beom Lee that has impressive production value, cinematography, and some highly stylized action sequences comparable to those in The Raid or Ong Bak films. While some plot elements feel a little familiar, the film is a solid watch for any fan of action filmmaking. If only the last two Die Hard films were as well done as this!

No Tears For The Dead stars Jang Dong-gun, Kim Min-hee, Brian Tee, Kim Hee-won, and Jun-seong Kim as John Lee.

Gon is a hitman, abandoned by his mother shortly after immigrating to America. Wracked by guilt for accidentally killing an innocent young girl, the situation becomes even thornier when his boss assigns him the job of killing her mother. Gon's new target, Mo-gyeong, a risk manager at an investment firm, has buried herself in work in her grief, and is completely unaware of her role at the heart of a dangerous conspiracy. Then, she meets a man who wants to tell her the truth behind the death of her child though many forces want her dead and the bloodbath that ensues is certainly memorable. Ultimately, Gon agonizes and faces a life or death choice - to follow the order to kill his target or to risk his own life at the price of redemption for his past.

CJ Entertainment does a fantastic job on its 4K Sony CineAlta F65 shoot with a 2.39:1 widescreen aspect ratio. There are multiple crystal clear lossless language tracks on the disc including English: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 (48kHz, 24-bit), English: LPCM 2.0 (48kHz, 24-bit), Korean: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 (48kHz, 24-bit) and Korean: LPCM 2.0. with optional English Subtitles of course.

Extras are vast and include A Making Of, Deleted Scenes, Director's Commentary, Brian Tee Interview, Two Character Spots, Behind The Scenes, Action Highlights, and several trailers in high definition of other CJ Entertainment releases.

I would recommend this film if you are looking for an action packed Korean bloodbath to add to your viewing list, especially if you like The Raid films.
