Diamond Heist (2012/Cinedigm DVD)

Picture: B- Sound: B- Extras: D Film: C-

Robert Koltai & Eva Gardos' Diamond Heist (2012, also released oddly, as Magic Boys) is paint by the numbers heist film starring Michael Madsen and Vinnie Jones that has some interesting action but an all too familiar plot. Failing to capture a mainstream audience enough for a theatrical run, the film pulls of Ocean's Eleven and even Magic Mike a bit when it comes to plot points.

The film follows a couple of different tacks, jumping between groups of characters in order to bring them all to a quirky conclusion. The first set, and most important, involves Zoli (Gyozo Szabo) and David (Csaba Pindroch), two Hungarian guys bumbling their way through life after getting fired from the champagne plant they both work at on the same day.

That place is owned by a big bad boss named Jack Varga (Vinnie Jones), a man known for his ruthless ways, and eventually they accidentally fall into one of Varga's schemes involving another bad guy in London named Terence (Michael Madsen). Terence is throwing a birthday bash with a bunch of male strippers, and since Varga knows Terence smuggles diamonds into the country, he devises a heist where some of Varga's strippers snatch the diamonds from under Terence's nose. A waste of two leads and our time, plus the producer was arrested for not making this film after tax breaks in Hungary.

Unfortunately, they let him out of jail, then let him make it.

Sound and Picture on the disc are standard for the DVD format boasting a standard definition, anamorphically enhanced 2.35 X 1 picture transfer and a lossy Dolby Digital 5.1 track. No extras on this release.
