50 To 1 (2014/Sony DVD)

Picture: B Sound: C Extras: C Film: B+

Two cowboys gamble the last of their money one time miracle horse Mine That Bird, but after a series of losses they have one last chance when Mine That Bird qualifies for the Kentucky Derby, but along the way they run into a series of mishaps and accidents, will they ever reach the Derby much less get to race?

Based on the true story, Jim Wilson's 50 to 1 is the story of Mine That Bird, a legendary horse from no where that challenged the world. Horse trainer Chip (Skeet Ulrich) sees and believes in the potential of Bird, but he can't decide if he wants to kiss or kill Bird's trainer/rider Alex. Between horse, rider and owner if they can work out their differences he might have a chance... but after losing several races they are considered the ultimate underdogs at the Kentucky Derby, a bunch of cowboys.

This was the typical American dream movie, American cowboys gambling on a long shot to win big. While I am no fan of horse racing, it IS a movie about rooting for the underdogs, it was more than a little obvious of the American patriotism symbolism. At times the film seemed like it wanted to be dramatic with a dash of romance or comedy, but it still worked. William Devane also stars.

The anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1 image looks good for DVD, but the lossy Dolby Digital 5.1 sound mix is laid back more often than expected. Extras include Making Of the film, Bloopers and Trailers.
