Teen
Titans Go! is a 'tongue in cheek' animated series based on the
(now) classic Teen Titans DC Comics series. In the superhero fandom,
there are an equal amount of lovers and haters of the series; some
calling it a bastardizing of a classic series, while others
(including myself) love the series for what it is, an off-center
fresh look at amzing part of the DC universe.
After
all, aren't true comic fans open to the idea of alternate universes
or other earths?
The
comedic Teen Titans Go! series started in 2013, inspired by a
series of popular shorts of the same style. The principle voice
actors from the previous Teen Titans series return to lend
their talents here. Other superheroes make cameos throughout the
series and the 'older' counterparts to these superhero teens are
often referenced.
Essentially,
Teen Titans Go! takes a look at our cast of teen superheroes
if they were living together without the constraints of their adult
mentors. This means plenty of hijinks; including pranks, teen angst,
fights, and other things (that would normally be mundane) like
driving tests and other teen firsts. For those unaware, the cast of
heroes includes Robin, Starfire, Cyborg, Raven, and Beast Boy.
The
series is meant to be fun and whereas it lacks the emotional depth
and continuity of the previous series, it stands on its own as an
excellent series that BOTH children and adults can enjoy. In the
same vein as animated films in recent history there are many jokes
that will go right over little kiddies heads, but adults will have a
chuckle. This, again, coupled with innumerable comic/superhero
references for true diehard fans to enjoy as Teen Titans Go! pokes
fun at the most classic of DC mythos.
This
Complete First Season release contains the first 52 episodes
of the popular series. The series has a second season and (happily)
has been renewed for a third.
The
technical features (as far as picture and sound) are very well done
for this First Season release. The picture is a bright,
crisp, clear 1.78 X 1, 1080p, AVC encoded, MPEG-4 digital High
Definition image. The entire series (by nature) uses a bright color
palette of solid reds, blues, greens and every other color of the
rainbow to bring the series to life. With crisp lines and inky
blacks the series displays wonderfully; and outside the hint of
aliasing, there are no major complaints. The sound is lossless
DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) 2.0 Stereo track that comes heavily from the
front when you use Pro Logic-type playback. Casual fans may think
this is 'just a kids show,' so no big deal; but Teen Titans Go! is
action packed at most times, so a more dynamic track would have been
warranted. The sound otherwise is crisp and clear, without any
issues.
There
are (sadly) no extras included on this set.
