Devil Hunter (1981)/Cannibal Terror (1980/Jess Franco Double Feature/Severin Films Blu-ray)

Picture: B- Sound: B Extras: C+ Films: C/C-

Often hailed as the King of Euro-sleaze, Jess Franco (Vampiros Lesbos/She Killed in Ecstasy) returns with two extremely low end Z-grade horror flicks, Cannibal Terror and Devil Hunter, that are just now finding their way onto disc in America for the first time uncut and uncensored. While Franco just directed Devil Hunter, he was a writer and involved with Cannibal Terror as well, which makes it essential viewing for Franco Fiends.

These films are not for the squeamish and may be a bit too much for a mainstream audience, however, thanks to the good people at Severin we get to enjoy them in all their terrible glory. If you're a gorehound and love extreme violence (especially if its low budget and made in the early '80s) then you won't want to miss this double feature release. Both of these films were under the Video Nasties movement and were banned by the United Kingdom in the 1980s due to their content. (Be sure to check out the Video Nasties documentary if you're a fan, reviewed elsewhere on this site, along with our other Franco coverage.)

Devil Hunter is set amongst jungle tribes that live in fear of the devil. Laura Crawford is a model who gets kidnapped by a gang of thugs whilst working in South America. They take her into the jungle and demand a huge ransom. Laura is guarded by some ridiculous looking native who calls himself The Devil and has to go through all manner of unpleasantness until the gang gets what the ransom they desire. Chained maidens are offered in supplication and the devil sexually demonstrates in a grossly excessive and literal manner. Enter Peter Weston, the devil hunter, who goes into the jungle in true Indiana Jones-style to try and rescue her... but will he succeed?

The plot for Cannibal Terror is pretty simple: two crooks (Mario and Roberto) kidnap a girl and hide out in the house of a friend who lives by trading with the natives in a nearby jungle. The friend's wife is raped by Mario; she exacts revenge by tying him to a tree and leaving him to the cannibals. She then informs the kidnapped girl's parents of their daughter's whereabouts, and the crooks flee through the jungle. This is a raunchy film with loads of gore, nudity, and sideburns to satisfy any gore fan!

Both films are presented in 1080p high definition with a widescreen aspect ratio of 1.85:1 and a lossy 5.1 Dolby Digital track. While the films are in pristine condition, we wouldn't want to watch them any other way! These films certainly have never looked or sounded as good as they do here!

Extras on the disc include:

'Spicy' Deleted Scene from Cannibal Terror

The Way of all Flesh: An Interview with Alain Deruelle aka Allan W Steeve

Sexo Cannibal - Interview with Director Jess Franco
