Haven: Season 5, Volume 1 (2014/EOne Blu-ray set)

Picture: B+ Sound: B+ Extras: B Episodes: C+

Based on Stephen King's The Colorado Kid, Haven is a SyFy Channel series that picks up after our Heroes victor of the evil William. After having successfully banished him into The Void, a gateway into another dimension, Nathan and Duke are devastated to discover that the Audrey Parker they know and love has disappeared. Instead, she now goes by Mara and has unusual powers. Herself responsible for creating century old trouble, Mara raises hell at every turn throughout the season with her big plans for gaining control over the small town of Haven. Featuring a cast of cool characters including witches and demons, this supernatural sci-fi show most closely reminded me of Grimm.

Having not watched the show from start to finish, I found it pretty easy to pick up from the start and think that it exceeded by initial impression of it. Though the cast are made of pretty faces, the story is interesting and leaves some interesting breadcrumbs along the way. There are moments of unique imagery, including a shock wave that levels a light house on an island, that specifically caught my eye. For fans of Stephen King, I would definitely suggest checking this out.

13 Episodes make up this first volume of Season 5 including See No Evil, Speak No Evil, Spotlight, Much Ado About Mara, The Old Switcheroo Parts 1 and 2, Nowhere Man, Exposure, Morbidity, Mortality, Reflections, and Chemistry.

Haven is presented in 1080p digital high definition with a widescreen aspect ratio of 1.78:1 and an impressive, lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track that sounds better than it has anywhere else. Total running time for this volume is 334 minutes.

13 Featurettes on Haven
