Jane The Virgin: The Complete First Season (2014 - 2015/Warner DVD Set)

Picture: B- Sound: B Extras: C+ Episodes: C

The Complete First Season of Jane the Virgin is a surprising one. This is due mainly to the concept the show is based on, which is a girl, Jane (Gina Rodriguez), gets impregnated during a routine gynecology visit. When I heard of this show coming to the CW Network, I thought it would be just be teem romance show catered to girls that pokes fun of sexual scenarios and people that chose to be virgins in this day and age, but that is not what the show is. It has heartfelt moments, as well as, serious situations such as murder mysteries.

Another serious situation is the reason Jane (Rodriguez) decides to carry the baby, which is Rafael (Justin Baldoni) had cancer and for some reason only saved one "specimen" to use if he wants a biological child. So, even though Jane, who if it was not obvious from the title is a virgin, I respect her for deciding to keep the child and give it to this man she does not know very well. However, it causes problems between Jane and her fiancé, Michael (Brett Dier) because he has to wait until they are married to consummate their love and now put up with her pregnancy with another man's child.

Jane the Virgin feels a lot like a telenovela, not that I watch them, but I do know what they are. If you are unfamiliar with this type of Spanish genre you can look at it much like a soap opera here in the United States. It is not exactly set up like that, but the writing tends to be a bit dramatic, in a kind of good way. There is long lost father, a not so loyal best friend, an unfaithful wife, sleeping with the father's wife, and that is just to name a few. So, if you have ever thought about what the appeal of a soap opera was I would give this a shot because the quality is much, much better.

Much like the other CW shows that I have reviewed, Jane the Virgin is presented in a "matted" widescreen 1.78:1 format, which preserves the aspect ratio from its original television broadcast for your TV. The audio is presented in English lossy Dolby Digital 5.1 and sounds pretty decent. There is a lot of narration and he comes through crisp and clear.

This season set comes on 5 discs with 22 episodes. In the show, you learn that Jane (Rodriguez) would like to be a writer so every episode is titled as a chapter. Therefore, instead of listing the episode titles, it starts with Chapter One (Pilot) and goes all the way to Chapter Twenty Two.

The special features on the 5 disc set for Jane the Virgin: The Complete First Season includes 2 All-New Featurettes: Jane the Virgin: Immaculate Creation and Getting to Know the Cast of Jane the Virgin, Unaired Scenes, and a Gag Reel.
