The Leftovers: The Complete First Season (2014/HBO/Warner Blu-ray Set)

Picture: A Sound: A Extras: B- Episodes: B+

The Leftovers: The Complete First Season (2014) is based on the book titled the same, The Leftovers, which is about a cataclysmic event that takes place all around the world involving 2 percent of the population to strangely disappearing at once. This show may not be for everyone, even if it was the best show out right now, because it could make you question certain things. With that being said, the show is quite good. It has interesting characters that you want to follow and learn about what their lives are like after "The Departure" and what their lives were like before.

I have not really seen Justin Theroux in much, but he gives a pretty good performance as Police Chief Kevin Garvey in The Leftovers and I enjoy the presence he brings to the screen. What turned me on to the show is that it is from one of the creators of the great television show Lost, Damon Lindelof. If you are at all familiar with the series you will know that The Leftovers has plenty of new sorrows, compelling stories, and very good performances from a great cast much like Lindelof's last show. However, I think it has a long ways to go to be a household favorite.

Besides the overwhelming aftermath of "The Departure," Chief Garvey (Theroux) has to put up with the main antagonist of the season, a cult called "The Guilty Remnant." To add more insult to the injury, his wife Laurie (Amy Brenneman) left the family to join this chain-smoking cult and causes problems all over town for those left behind. "The Guilty Remnant" is full of people that believe there is no meaning and that those trying to remember their loved ones are just wasting their breath.

The Leftovers has a good premise that keeps the audience wanting more. Everyone that watches the show will want to keep coming back to find out what happened to the 2 percent that left and to see why those people were chosen, because we learn it does not matter if you are a mother, father, husband, wife, kid, baby, no one that we know of is spared.

The good news is the picture quality is very good, because HBO is putting out an impressive lineup of shows and making sure they are in high definition, The Leftovers is no exception. Every color is spot on to the tone of this series and they pay attention to the scenery and chaos. The complete first season is presented on two discs in Blu-ray HD with a 1.78:1 transfer. The audio is lossless DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) 5.1 track that will have you on the edge of your seat with crisp and clear dialogue and a variety of other sounds you will enjoy.

There are 10 episodes on The Complete First Season of The Leftovers, which includes the Pilot, Penguin One, Us Zero, Two Boats and a Helicopter, B.J. and the A.C., Gladys, Guest, Solace for Tired Feet, Cairo, The Garveys at Their Best, and The Prodigal Son Returns.

The extras on the two discs include Commentary tracks on the Pilot and Finale Episodes, Making The Leftovers, I Remember: A Season One Conversation with Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta, Living Reminders: The Guilty Remnant, and Beyond the Book: Season 2. It also includes a digital copy of the season.
