The Rocky Horror Picture Show: 40th Anniversary Edition (1975/Fox Blu-ray)

Picture: B+ Sound: B+ Extras: B Film: B

It's been four decades since the cult favorite Rocky Horror Picture Show was released to low fanfare but now is considered one of the most outrageous films ever made, captured here in all its glory with several different versions of the film to choose from (the US or the UK versions) and even an alternate Black and White opening that is very much inspired by The Wizard Of Oz. I didn't grow up with the film and have never been to a screening of it but it is a fun ride with a great cast and great musical numbers.

While driving home during a rain filled night, straight-laced lovebirds Brad and Janet (Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon), by chance, end up at the castle of one Dr. Frank-N-Furter (Tim Curry) and his strange and bizarre entourage, and find that he's having a party. This is no ordinary party, no ordinary night. This is the unveiling of the Doctor's latest creation: Rocky (Peter Hinwood), a man-made Adonis that will give... absolute pleasure. This is an exceedingly grand visual and musical camp satire of the golden days of the B-movie horror and science-fiction genres. Projected along with a musical soundtrack to give "audience participation" a new meaning in dimension, time and space, this shall be a night that both Brad and Janet will remember for a very, very long time in the sexually kinky, rock 'n roll rock-opera world of a gender-bending scientist...and his time warped plans.

Presented in 1080p with a widescreen aspect ratio of 1.85:1, the film has been re-mastered and looks and sounds better than ever (the last Blu-ray edition looked good, but fans found it overly cleaned; were only looking at outright fidelity) with an English DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) 7.1 track, a Dolby Digital Mono track, and lossy Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks in Portuguese and French.

Special Features include featurettes highlighting past celebrations and midnight screenings, deleted musical scenes, 11 outtakes, alternate endings, commentaries by Richard O'Brien and Patricia Quinn (Magenta), photo galleries and more!

Rocky-oke: Sing It! - which includes 18 show-stopping musical numbers from the hugely popular soundtrack: ''Touch-A, Touch-A, Touch Me,'' ''Sweet Transvestite,'' ''The Time Warp'' and more! The Blu-ray also features incredible HD featurettes, as well as a photo gallery from Rock 'N' Roll's seminal photographer Mick Rock, which dives deeper into Rock's experience capturing the moment on-set and behind-the-scenes of the 1975 film.

If this is your cup of tea then this is definitely the edition to get. Affordable and packed with extras, this is the version to own, but try our coverage of the previous Blu-ray for more information on the film...
