Gatchaman - The Movie (1978/Sentai Blu-ray)

Picture: C+ Sound: C+ Extras: D Film: C+

The Earth is in danger as the mysterious Alien X and Berg Katse with their mutant army continues to create weapons of mass destruction. Only Gatchaman, the Science Ninja Team can save the world. Backed by the greatest scientist in the world, Dr. Nambu, they fly in to action with their mighty ship God Phoenix to defeat the mutant armies and their alien overlords. This is the 1978 movie version of the international animated hit 1972 TV series.

Before Power Rangers there was Gatchaman, a group of winged costumed heroes to fight the terrorist organization know only as Galactor, they create various machine monsters and threaten to destroy the world unless the world leaders summit to their demands. Only Gatchaman stands in their way, backed by the greatest scientific minds of mankind Ken the Eagle, Joe the Condor, Jun the Swan, Ryu the Owl, and Jinpei the Swallow, lead the fight to stop the various doomsday machines which cause natural disasters all over the world.

Also known also as Battle Of The Planets in the U.S. in truncated form, this was a series someone dug up from cold storage, you could tell from the character design it was from the 1970s and when people feared the abuse of nuclear weapons and power would destroy the world [more than now apparently]. But you could also see how this series greatly inspired more modern series such as the Power Rangers.

The 1.33 X 1 digital High Definition image can be a bit rough and dated, not looking as good as Sentai's Blu-ray set of the series, plus the lossless DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) 2.0 Mono in both Japanese and English also show their age, making the combination good at best. Extras only include trailers, but for more on that original series, nicely issued on Blu-ray by Sentai, go to our coverage at this link...
