The Last Witch Hunter (2015/Summit/Lionsgate Blu-ray w/DVD)

Picture: B+/C+ Sound: A/B- Extras: B Film: C

Vin Diesel stars in the 90 Million-Dollar studio tentpole film The Last Witch Hunter (2015), a new fantasy/action film directed by Breck Eisner (Sahara, The Crazies remake). From the moment I saw the trailer, I knew that this film was going to bomb mainly on the lackluster production value and bad CG effects the trailer shocking displayed. However narratively, the film suffers as well.

This film reminds me a lot of Constantine (the film and the television series) and the recent Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters film, however I felt like that had a lot more charm than this. It does boast a decent cast with Diesel, Rose Leslie (Game of Thrones), Elijah Wood, and the always stunning Sir. Michael Caine. Despite this, I still couldn't help but find myself bored of the film about twenty minutes in, which says a lot because I am a diehard genre cinema buff.

The modern world holds many secrets, the most astounding being that witches still live among us. Centuries ago, Kaulder (Vin Diesel) managed to slay the all-powerful Witch Queen, decimating her followers in the process. Before her death, she cursed the valiant warrior with her own immortality, separating him from his beloved wife and daughter in the afterlife. Her resurrection now threatens the survival of the human race as Kaulder, the only one of his kind remaining, faces her vengeful wrath.

Presented in 1080p high definition with a widescreen aspect ratio of 2.40:1 and a crystal clear, lossless DTS-X audio track (7.1 here for this review), the film looks and sounds amazing on disc. Also on the disc are tracks in English 2.0 DTS Digital Surround Audio, a Spanish 5.1 DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) lossless mix, English Descriptive Audio, and English DTS Headphone: X Audio.

Also included is the standard DVD version of the film in standard definition with an anamorphic widescreen aspect ratio of 2.40:1 and a lossy Dolby Digital 5.1 track that is passable at best. A UV copy of the film is also included.

Extras include...

- "Crafting the Magic: The Last Witch Hunter" Featurette

- Animated Short Films - The Origins of the Axe and Cross

- The Last Witch Hunter Sizzle Reel / "Paint It, Black"

- Feature-Length Audio Commentary with Director Breck Eisner
