Sniper: Special Ops (2016/Lionsgate DVD)

Picture: B- Sound: B- Extras: C Film: C-

If you're a fan of Steven Seagal, then you won't want to miss his newest outing which has him as an expert sniper of a Special Ops Military Force. From a production design and overall look, Fred Olen Ray's Sniper: Special Ops (2016) is surprisingly not terrible. However, it's complete lack of really engaging performances and slow moving and predictable plot took me out of it pretty quickly.

A Special Ops Unit led by Sergeant Vic Mosby (Tim Abell) have a secret weapon: an expert Sniper named Jake Chandler (Seagal) and are sent to a Afghan village to extract an American Congressman being held prisoner by the Taliban.

Obviously the rescue mission is a success, but Jake, separated after a firefight with the enemy, stays behind to help an injured soldier. Sergeant Vic Mosby desperately tries to convince Lieutenant Colonel Jackson (Dale Dye) to let him go back and save the soldiers, but is ordered on a mission to retrieve a truckload of munitions which could be vital for lives at the military base. Violating orders, Vic and his Special Ops Team decide to head back to the village to rescue the stranded soldiers and engage in a massive shootout against the enemy.

Presented in standard definition with an anamorphic widescreen aspect ratio of 1.78:1 and a lossy 5.1 Dolby Digital track, the film looks and sounds fine for the DVD format but could benefit to high definition enough for a higher format, no matter its flaws or budget limits. A Digital Copy Included for your smart phone or tablet.

Extras include a Director's Audio Commentary Stills Gallery and a Trailer.

Predictable action fair and nothing spectacular, Sniper: Special Ops is another foray into familiar territory with character archetypes we've also seen before.
