Symptoms (1974 aka The Blood Virgin/Mondo Macabro Blu-ray)

Picture: B Sound: B Extras: B Film: C+

From our friends at Mondo Macabro comes the fantastic new Blu-ray release of the long lost 1974 film, Symptoms aka The Blood Virgin, which is a bizarre female psychological thriller. Presented here in a fantastic new High Definition transfer from the original 35mm film negative, the film looks and sounds better than ever before (for the times it was actually seen) and has some great additional extras to back it up. The film stars Angela Pleasance, Lorna Heilbron, Peter Vaughan, Raymond Huntley & Mike Grady and is directed by Jose Roman Larraz.

Compared to Roman Polanski's Repulsion (see elsewhere on this site from Criterion), Symptoms features a young woman (Pleasance) who is invited by her wealthy friend to come and stay with her in her luxurious English country mansion. Once she gets there though, she soon realizes that nothing was what at it first seemed.

As mentioned, the film looks stunning in its new HD transfer from the original negative with a widescreen aspect ratio of 1.33:1 (bookended in a 1.78 X 1 frame, with nice color and a good, naturalistic look) that is accompanied by a great sounding 24-bit PCM 2.0 Mono audio track that restores the original soundtrack to its former glory.

Extras include...

On Vampyres and Other Symptoms documentary

Euratika! documentary about Director Jose Roman Larraz

Interview with editor Brian Medley-Aston

Interview with Angela Pleasance

Interview with Lorna Neilbron

An interesting film and interesting edition of it on Blu-ray disc, definitely worth checking out if you're a fan of cult films, lost films or the interesting cast!
