Shrek: Anniversary Edition (2001/DreamWorks Animation/Fox Blu-ray w/DVD)

Picture: B/C+ Sound: A/C+ Extras: A Film: A-

He's big, mean and green, he's Shrek the ogre. Shrek (voiced by Mike Meyers) is sent on a mission for Lord Farquaad to rescue Princess Fiona. Along with his loudmouth talking donkey (Eddie Murphy), together they will go on a unexpected adventure of a lifetime and most unfairy tale-like ending in the original hit classic Shrek (2001), the huge first hit of the biggest franchise and still one of the biggest hits in the early history of DreamWorks Animation.

Shrek is an Ogre living in the swamp until Lord Farquaad started forcing all fairytale characters off the land (and into his swamp) to make his perfect kingdom. Now all he needs is a princess to make himself the king. In order to keep his land (and others off it) Shrek makes a deal with Farquaad to rescue Princess Fiona, but the last thing they expect was Shrek and Fiona to fall in love, can an Ogre and a Princess find their happily ever after together?

This is the 15th Anniversary addition of Shrek, the comedy adventure filled tale of an Ogre, Princess and their talking Donkey, sending up the entire fairytale world like nothing else out there, much imitated since, but never equaled. John Lithgow, Cameron Diaz, Vincent Cassel, Chris Miller, Kathleen Freeman and an uncredited Frank Welker lead the voice cast.

The 1080p 1.78 X 1 digital High definition image seems like the older HD master from previous Blu-ray editions, but it looks just fine, but the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 lossless mix has more impact and has so much sound, I wonder if this will get an 11.1 mix later. The anamorphically enhanced DVD with lossy Dolby Digital 5.1 sound seems hopelessly dated and hard to watch. Extras include Shrek, Rattle & Roll Music, Best of Shrek Shorts, commentary, deleted scenes, Shrek's Interactive Journey, The Animator's Corner, Karaoke Dance Party, Secrets of Shrek, Spotlight on Donkey and trailers.
