Rin-ne: Collection 1 (2015/aka Kyokai no Rin-ne: Collection 1/Sentai Blu-ray Set)

Picture: C+ Sound: B Extras: C Episodes: B+

Ever since Sakura was little, she has been a medium for spirits as she can see and hear them. Till now, they have only been a minor annoyance, until she met Rinne Rokudo. Rokudo is a Shinigami who helps spirits to move on to the Wheel of Reincarnation in order to pay off his debts. They work together to help spirits move on to the next plane of existence in Rin-ne: Collection 1 (2015).

Sakura discovers her classmate Rokudo is a Shinigami (who is usually invisible to mortal eyes) and is also able to see the 'spirits'. Rokudo is actually a half Shinigami half human. Sakura and Rokudo are connect in the past Rokudo's grandmother Tamako (who hates to be called grandmother and prefers to be called 'young lady') but she doesn't remember it. Rokudo is poor due to his no good Damashigami (fallen Shinigami) father, who left him a lifetime of debts (and continues steal from him daily) and make his life a living hell. Sakura and Rokudo are joined with Rokumon, a chibi cat boy/Rokudo's familiar, Jumonji - an exorcist and Ageha - a female Shinigami. Together, they enjoy high school life and protect the human realm from the spirits, demons and Damashigamis.

From the creator of Ranma 1/2 and Inuyasha comes Rumiko Takahashi's latest series, Rin-ne or Kyokai no Rin-ne, which combines and makes fun of high school drama with supernatural/spiritual adventures with comedy and romance, there are many to Japanese cultural/spiritual/ghost references. This is smart, even complex stuff, so check it out.

A combination of mixed art and the transfer makes the 1080p 1.78 X 1 digital High Definition image a bit of a disappointment, though color can be decent, but the lossless Japanese DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) 2.0 Stereo tracks with Pro Logic-like surrounds are warm and well recorded, so they are a playback plus. Extras include clean opening & closing animations and trailers.
