Louder Than Bombs (2015/Sony DVD)

Picture: B- Sound: B- Extras: B- Film: B

From the Director of Reprise, Joachim Trier's new drama Louder Than Bombs (2015) is a heartbreaking tale about a troubled family and features an all-star cast in Gabriel Byrne, Isabelle Huppert, Amy Ryan, Devin Druid, and Jessie Eisenberg. Impressively photographed and powerfully acted, the film is ultimately a study of family during hard times and is relatable to anyone who has lost a parent or closed loved one.

When the death of their mother, an honorable war photographer named Isabelle Reed (Huppert), is cut short due to a deadly car accident, a Father (Byrne) and his two sons (Eisenberg and Druid) are left picking up the pieces. Hiding some secrets from them and dating someone new, their father struggles to reconnect with his two sons and helps them remember their mother in a true and honorable light.

Presented in standard definition with a anamorphic widescreen aspect ratio of 1.85:1 and a lossy Dolby Digital 5.1 track, the film looks and sounds fine for the DVD format, but it is also available on Blu-ray and if it plays this well here, you should consider seeing it in that format if you have a machine.

Special Features include

Director's Commentary

Behind The Scenes Featurette

Photo Gallery

While powerfully done, the film may not have been be enough to get the attention of the Academy last year, but is definitely worth a watch if you're a fan of dramatic films.
