No doubt an influence on films like Free Willy or Old Yeller, 1983's The Black Stallion Returns is a family friendly sequel that continues the adventure of a boy, his horse and the close bond that the two share. Produced by Francis Ford Coppola and directed by Robert Dalva (who was the editor of the original 1979 film, The Black Stallion), the film stars Kelly Reno, Teri Garr, Vincent Spano, Ferdy Mayne and narration by Hoyt Axton.

Set in Morocco, young Alec Ramsay (Reno) and his champion Arabian stallion horse known as The Black, are inseparable. That is until a wealthy Sheik named Ishak (Mayne) comes to reclaim The Black - to which he claims is his property. Ramsay must face all the odds against him to reclaim not only his animal but his close friend.

Restored and presented in 1080p high definition with a widescreen aspect ratio of 1.85:1 and a sharp-sounding, upgraded, lossless DTS-HD Master Audio English 5.1 track, the film looks and sounds better than ever on Blu-ray disc, with evidence they were trying to match the beauty of the original. Also on the disc is an English DTS-HD MA 2.0 Stereo (it was a Dolby A-type analog theatrical release originally with monophonic (Pro Logic) surrounds) track that sounds good as well, but not as good as the former.

Extras include...

Isolated Music Score Track by the great Georges Delerue

Theatrical Trailer

Collectible insert booklet with Julie Kirgo's fine essay on the film

If you're a fan of heartfelt family films where the bond between animal and man are front and center, then you won't want to miss this film. To me, it felt predictable and a lot of the same story elements and archetypes that I've seen before, but the fine filmmaking and exceptional score kept me interested.
