Fred Schepisi's 1990 espionage/romance The Russia House is available on Blu-ray for the first time with a fantastic presentation and great extras. Starring Sir Sean Connery and Michelle Pfeiffer (with a Russian accent), the romance is an adaptation of John le Carre's bestselling novel. While a little slow, the film is romantic at its core and has a great supporting cast in Roy Scheider, James Fox, John Mahoney, and Klaus Maria Brandauer.

Three notebooks containing Russian military secrets are handed to a British publisher named Barely Blair (Connery) during a Russian book conference and he soon finds his life turned upside down. Intercepted by the British Secret Service, who are naturally keen to learn if these these books are the real deal, Blair soon goes undercover to determine if these books point to nuclear plans. In the meantime, he meets a beautiful Russian woman (Pfeiffer), and the author of the manuscript (Brandauer), all of which end up in drama that stretches beyond the original assignment.

Presented in 1080p high definition with a widescreen aspect ratio of 2.35:1 and a lossless English DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) 2.0 Stereo track (with Pro Logic surrounds), the film looks and sounds better than every before on Blu-ray disc versus the bad video transfers circulating over the years since it did poorly at the box office. A beautifully shot film, the texture and detail seen here leaves little to be desired.

While maybe too slow for many, the film is full of great performances and beautiful locations that have been captured in this great release.
