In
what was warned in theatrical trailers as the scariest performance of
Vincent Price's career, The 1973 Douglas Hickox film Theatre
Of Blood
shows how one artist/actor took criticism a bit too personal. At
times, the film is very grotesque, with some brutal killings that
almost borderline on Dario Argento territory. One such kill, I am
sure influenced the filmmakers of the Nightmare
on Elm Street
films, where a man is fed to death. Not for the faint of heart but a
must watch for lovers of cult cinema or the Dr.
Phibes
films, Theatre
of Blood
has a brilliant cast which includes Diana Rigg, Robert Morley, Jack
Hawkins, Harry Andrews, Arthur Lowe, Joan Hickson, Robert Coote,
Michael Hordern, Dennis Price, Ian Hendry, Diana Dors, Milo O'Shea,
Madeline Smith and Coral Browne.
When
a Shakespearean Actor (Price) doesn't get the critical praise he
deserves on his latest performance, he takes the criticism to heart
and fakes his own death. One by one, Price targets each of the
critics that did him wrong and kills them in unusual and brutal ways,
inspired by Shakespeare's writing all the while quoting the works at
the climax of each kill. A Price dark comedy not made by AIP, it is
among his best such films.
Presented
in 1080p high definition with a widescreen aspect ratio of 1.66:1 and
a new English 2.0 DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) Mono lossless track, the
film looks and sounds better than any previous standard definition
release. The texture and vast color palette are on full display here
as once again Twilight Time delivers superior quality on par with the
Arrow U.K. import edition we reviewed a bit ago here...
