Viral (2016/Anchor Bay/Dimension DVD)

Picture: B- Sound: B- Extras: D Film: C+

The Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost directed film Viral (2016) is much like other films in the 'virus movie' genre such as Contagion with a touch of Romero's The Crazies. Produced by Dimension and Blumhouse, the production value is surprisingly strong with some decent performances but ends up being too much like other films before it to be really leave a lasting impression. The film stars Michael Kelly, Sofia Black-D'Elia and Analeigh Tipton.

Two Teens Emma and Stacey (Elia and Tipton) move to a new Californian town with their biology teacher dad (Kelly) who is going through a divorce. One day, Emma's friends leaves class early and starts to have a bizarre seizure, signaling the rise in infected persons in the town who have fallen victim to a 'worm virus.' Soon, the natural world ends up becoming a breeding ground for the infected and the two girls end up on a fight for their lives.

Presented in standard definition with an anamorphic widescreen aspect ratio of 2.39:1 and a lossy Dolby Digital 5.1 track, the film looks and sounds fine for DVD but could definitely benefit to a high definition upgrade. No extras.

Not without its interesting moments, Viral starts promising but ends up becoming a run of the mill thriller.
