In
the mid-1980s, Steven Spielberg produced the fantasy/adventure
anthology show Amazing
Stories,
which now lands on import DVD disc thanks to Umbrella with its full
Second
Season,
spanning four DVDs. Sporting some major talent behind and in front
of the lens, this classic show has some hits and misses but is
continually entertaining. It's a shame that Spielberg doesn't reboot
this show for today's audience, as it would be interesting to see new
stories told and could be a way to help some young filmmakers find a
voice and for veterans to flex their muscles a bit outside of feature
filmmaking. This season's acting list includes the late Patrick
Swayze, Danny DeVito, and Christopher Lloyd to name just a few.
Produced
by Kathleen Kennedy and longtime husband/producing partner Frank
Marshall (Jurassic
Park),
the show has some big names in the directing chair including Robert
Zemeckis, Joe Dante (Gremlins),
Danny DeVito, Tobe Hooper (Poltergeist),
and Tom Holland (Fright
Night)
amongst others. There was more than one time while watching this
that my mouth dropped to see some of the names involved here.
Episodes
include The
Wedding Ring, Miscalculation, Magic Saturday, Welcome to My
Nightmare, You Gotta Believe Me, The Greibble, Life on Death Row, Go
to the Head of the Class, Thanksgiving, The Pumpkin Connection, What
If..?, The Eternal Mind, Lane Change, Blue Man Down, The 21 inch Sun,
The Family Dog, Gershwin's Trunk, Such Interesting Neighbors, Without
Diana, Moving Day,
and Miss
Stardust.
Presented
in standard definition with a full frame aspect ratio of 1.33:1 and a
lossy Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo track, the show looks and sounds fine
for DVD but could be improved by a Blu-ray update. A boxset
including both seasons on Blu-ray would be ideal, but is probably
unlikely for now.
No
extras sadly.
A
creative show with some big ideas and some big names is a fun time
capsule to revisit on DVD, I would suggest to fans of the classic
Spielberg era. For a look at the First
